We arrived in Tunis, the object of all our hopes, the focus of every gaze, a meeting place for travelers from east and west. This is the place where fleets and caravans meet. Here you will find everything a man could desire. Do you wish to travel by land? Here are countless companions for your journey. Do you prefer the sea? Here are boats sailing in all directions. Tunis is a crown whose jewels are its neighborhoods; its suburbs are like a flower garden constantly refreshed by the breeze.
Diary of a 13th-century traveler.
Tunisia, gateway to Africa, frontier of Europe. A border that, unlike ours, is clearly delineated, carefully monitored, with rules strictly enforced by the relevant customs authorities, as befits a truly sovereign country. A journey as long as ours, especially considering the alternatives, which, for others, amount to a handful of days, literally thrown southward into the desert, effectively diminishing a splendid country that deserves far more attention and moments of reflection! Not for us, definitely: almost two weeks spent first visiting the north, then heading south, skirting the Algerian border, on the usual secondary roads, with our now habitual wandering and despite security concerns due to a situation of friction between the central government and some of the northern mountain tribes, which forced us to modify half of the third stage. Otherwise, the usual friendliness was evident among the people, the consistently spectacular landscapes, incredible lighting, and a road system that had already left a positive impression on me last year during the reconnaissance. What more can I say?
